2018 is a big year for fans of both Battlefield & Call of Duty. Every gamer knows that we will see Activision release a Call of Duty game near the holiday season. In what was a bit of a surprise, EA announced last month that they would be releasing another Battlefield game. As of today, there are little known details about each game as EA is waiting to do a full reveal during this summers E3 conference & Activision is planning their reveal during a community event May 17.
Black Ops 4 will release on October 12, 2018 on PS4/XboxOne/PC. As Call of Duty fans already know, this years CoD game will be developed by Treyarch. While Call of Duty: WW2 was a decent game, I felt that the campaign mode was a bit underwhelming. On that front Black Ops usually delivers also, it will be interesting where the setting of this game takes place. Black Ops 1 took place the 1960's, BO 2 was set during the late 80s/2025 & BO 3 was set in 2065. Hopefully they decide to bring this game back closer to today's era, the futuristic era of the game got old quickly.
The ever popular Zombie mode could also use a re-do. Maybe they can revisit Horde mode off Call of Duty: Ghosts. Another interesting possibility is that the series could get a Battle Royale mode ala Fortnite/PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Forbes discovered that Call of Duty: Online players in China were beta testing a version of the game mode but on a much smaller scale compared to Fortnite/Battlegrounds. We will all find out what will be in this year's version of the game next month.

Now if you can't wait for Black Ops 4, you can pick up CoD: Modern Warfare 2 Remaster sometime this year. As of now there is no official release date even though Amazon claims the game will release April 30th. This game is beloved by fans of the series & is arguably the best in the series. The remaster does come with a MAJOR caveat. The game will only be campaign only. Now call me crazy, but the best part of a Call of Duty game is the multiplayer. How can they think of releasing the best multiplayer game of the series without multiplayer. I think that is a silly move on Activision's part. Most likely though, they will release it AFTER the release of Black Ops 4 since they can't have gamers playing Modern Warfare 2 instead of BO 4.
There are little details known about Battlefield V. What is known is that the game is set during World War II. It will be an entirely new game & not a remaster of 2005's Battlefield 2. The strategy of shifting back to the WW I/WW II era worked for EA as Battlefield 1 was the 2nd best selling game of 2016 (according to industry tracking firm The NDP Group). Today, Battlefield 1 still has over 25 million players & since Call of Duty: WW II was such a success, it proved that the market for WW I/II era shooters is still there. If EA learned any lessons from the past year (ahem Star Wars Battlefront 2) is that they need to stay away from loot boxes. All will be known at E3.
Once these games are released not only will the battle take place in the virtual world but it will also take place at the sales register. Let's face it, these two games are always compared to each other in the gaming community. Fans of each game will want their game to be the best first person shooter this year. I just want to get my hands on both games. Let the battle commence!
