The world's biggest sporting event is nearly here! No, I'm not talking about the Super Bowl, I'm talking about the World Cup! Earlier this month Sports Illustrated released the details of the upcoming release.
In the past, EA Sports usually released it's own standalone World Cup game every 4 years to coincide with the real World Cup. However, this year they are abandoning that model & instead are releasing it as an expansion to FIFA 18. If the rumors are true, then the best part about the expansion is that it will be FREE!. Now EA & the word free typically don't go well together but the company did the same thing for its Ultimate Team mode back in 2014, a great look for a company that needs some positive PR.
We can look forward to controlling our virtual footballers by the end of the month or early March. EA wants the update to be released a few months before the festivities begin this summer. Spanish commentator Manolo Lama confirmed the release to Spanish radio station Radio COPE as he recorded new commentary for the game.
We can expect to see all 32 nations that qualified for the World Cup to be in the game, complete with new kits & updated player models. Also, the new venues in Russia will be included as well. Hopefully, we can expect more than just 32 teams. How else are us American fans going to erase the failure of the US Men's National Team?
I think most fans of the game expect this expansion to have most of the features of the standalone game. While its unlikely to see all 209 from the last World Cup game, we should see some of the bigger nations represented even if they didn't qualify in real life. We need an updated soundtrack as well. Any FIFA player will tell you that the soundtrack is months ahead of radio/television. I can't tell you how many times I have heard that song "Best Friend" by Sofi Tukker on FIFA months before Apple decided to use it in iPhone X commercials.
I personally can't wait for this expansion! I expect EA to not drop the ball on this one. FIFA players everywhere will soon be able to create their own virtual World Cups! The expansion is set to release by early March on PS4, Xbox One & Nintendo Switch.
